1971, the legend "Mayumi Itsuwa" was born on the same year as the CBS Sony's Japanese music division.

50 years along with Sony Music.

In 1971, CBS Sony took their first step into a new genre, Japanese music. The following year in 1972, Mayumi Itsuwa established her personal label "UMI" within the CBS Sony and made her brilliant debut. Her debut project started in 1971, when the Japanese music division was established in the CBS Sony. As soon as the project kicked off, she started her recording in L.A. and it continued for 2 months. Carole King, Charles Larkey, David Campbell, and other leading American artists participated in the recording. Mayumi Itsuwa is a pioneer of Japanese artists who succeeded in overseas recording. It was a big decision made by CBS Sony at that time to step into the Japanese music genre, and the company as a whole was pushing this important debut. 50 years later, 45 singles and 53 albums (includes her compilation albums and live recording albums). Itsuwa Mayumi is an artist representing Sony Music and an artist who spent her musical career with Sony Music. She is still active as an artist, and she is a Japanese singer-songwriter with the longest enrollment in Sony Music.

Biography

1967First year of high school, at the farewell party for the graduating students, sings in front of all the students.
Second year of high school forms a female folk duo "Fancy Free Singers" with a classmate friend.

1968Fancy Free Singers gets featured on TBS Television's morning show "Young 720", and sings "Hurry Sundown" by Peter, Paul & Mary.
After graduating high school, enters English school (YMCA in Kanda). However, dropped out six months later and starts her musical career.

1970~71Starts part-time job playing guitar in Ginza, Tokyo, and then sings at Jean-Jean in Shibuya. Went around several US military camps and her "Tennessee Waltz" becomes popular.

1972June: Travels to the United States to produce an album. Starts recording the first album produced by John Fischbach at Crystal Sound studio in L.A.
Dramatic encounter with Carole King was a memorable moment. Later meets David Campbell, who will be working on some of the arrangements.
September: Launches new label "UMI", run by Mayumi Itsuwa herself.
October: Makes her debut with the single "Shoujo" from CBS Sony. Releases the album "Itsuwa Mayumi / Shoujo".

1973April: Returns to the United States. Records at Crystal Sound studio.
July: Releases the album "Kazenonaisekai". "Kinoumade no Omoide" is released as a single.
Latter half: "Tobacco no Kemuri" was used in the commercial for PILOT fountain pen and becomes the second single from the album.
First live recording at Shibuya Jean-Jean.

November: Invites members of The Section (Leland Sklar, Craig Doerge) from the United States to record her second live at Jean-Jean.

1975February: Releases "Rakujitsu no Theme", a theme song for NHK Taiga Drama "Oretachi no Shippai".
March: Releases the live album "Hontou no Koto wo Ieba".
Spring: Concert with David Campbell (arrangement, viola), and Loren Newkirk (p) from L.A.
Some of the songs are included in "MAYUMITY".
Summer: Records a new album at home in Hachioji, Tokyo, a residential area built in the mountains.
Since there were no soundproofing equipment, there were many complaints. She decides to invite her neighbors and held a meeting while listening to the songs.
However, the resulting sound was very natural, and it was "a recording in which the voice quality was maximized by the natural air."
Records her first session with Haruomi Hosono and Shigeru Suzuki.
October: Releases the album "Mayumity-Utsurona Ai-".
December: Releases "The SHOW" which records her Spring live performances.

1976Spring: CBS Records in France praises the album "Mayumity" and encourages her to do recordings in France.
December: Travels to France for recording.

Mayumi Itsuwa's songs are loved by many people. She still has a strong fan base in Asian countries. In 1982, she was the first Japanese artist to hold a solo concert with 8,000 Hong Kong fans, which was widely reported in Asian countries. In Indonesia, "Kokoro no Tomo" included in the album "Shiosai" became a blockbuster. It is said that the song is Indonesia' second national anthem, and it is still being sung in their everyday life in Japanese.
